Beacon

Beacon is a suspended sculptural drawing that combines intricate textile surfaces with unusual forms. Artist Lyn Carter first conceptualized the work using inkblots on paper to develop a bold, sinuous shape before translating the illustration into a large-scale 3-dimensional object. Using aluminum rings and vivid yellow-green nylon, Carter creates a surprisingly light-weight sculpture with a visually substantial presence. Beacon was commissioned for Queen’s Square lobby atrium in conjunction with Carter’s major solo exhibition, Columna, on show at Cambridge Art Galleries from November 5, 2011 to January 3, 2012. The sculpture remained in the lobby until 2015 when it was reinstalled in the first floor Young Adult Fiction section, where it remains today as a mainstay of the Gallery’s public art collection.
