Cambridge Clothing Index (Closet Stories)

In 1999, Cambridge Galleries commissioned a large-scale work of fibre art for Clemens Mill Library. Of 35 entries, Mindy Yan Miller’s proposal for Cambridge Clothing Index (Closet Stories) was selected. Inspired by the relationship between clothing and memory, Miller sought to create a portrait of the Cambridge community using donated garments. Thousands of clothes were carefully folded and arranged in 21 custom-built maple cases on the wall at Clemens Mill. In addition to the installation, an index of the accompanying stories was made available to the public.
