One Seed, One Community Cambridge

New Red Fire Organic Lettuce sits on a garden tray outside.

One Seed, One Community Cambridge (OSOC Cambridge) is an initiative that unites the Cambridge and North Dumfries community in the shared experience of growing nutritious food and saving seeds. Created by four local organizations: Cambridge Food Bank, rare Charitable Research Reserve, Seeds of Diversity, and Cambridge Public Library, OSOC Cambridge is an annual program that offers free seeds, community connections, and the experience of growing and sharing food.

Each year a new seed variety is selected by OSOC Cambridge. The feature seed for the 2026 planting season is New Red Fire Organic Lettuce. This classic red leaf lettuce has large, crisp leaves with a sweet flavour. Easy to grow in the summer, this lettuce variety is resilient in the heat and therefore unlikely to bolt. Pick as baby leaves or wait to harvest the large lettuce head all at once.

Everyone can participate in the full circle growing process through the following steps:

  1. Pick up free seed packets at any Cambridge Public Library location in early spring, while supplies last.
  2. Plant and care for your seedlings – watch them grow.
  3. Harvest and enjoy your New Red Fire Organic Lettuce. If you have more than you can enjoy, Cambridge Food Bank is thrilled to accept freshly harvested produce or dry goods.
  4. Learn about growing, cooking, or seed saving your Red Fire Organic Lettuce at various events throughout the season. Check
participating organization calendars for more details.
  5. Save and donate your seeds. The seed libraries at Cambridge Public Library and Cambridge Food Bank will gratefully accept seed donations.

This year from April 19 to October 31, join OSOC Cambridge on ReadSquaredRegister online to complete challenges, each challenge you complete is another change to win the grand prize, which will be done at the end of the season.

Join One Seed, One Community Cambridge in helping to grow our community, one seed at a time.
