About the Book
Denison Avenue brings together ink artwork and fiction to tell the story of Wong Cho Sum, an elderly widow navigating Toronto’s gentrifying Chinatown–Kensington Market. After the sudden loss of her husband, Cho Sum begins collecting bottles and cans to keep grief and loneliness at bay. On her long walks through the city, she meets new friends, confronts classism and racism, and seeks to rebuild her life in a rapidly transforming neighbourhood.
A poignant meditation on aging, gentrification, and resilience, the book beautifully combines visual art, fiction, and the endangered Toisan dialect to create a moving portrait of vulnerable Chinese Canadian elders in an evolving city.
Denison Avenue is by illustrator Daniel Innes and writer Christina Wong. Innes is a Toronto-born multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans painting, design, tattooing, and immersive installation. Wong is a playwright, prose writer, and multidisciplinary artist whose work across theatre, prose, and audio storytelling reflects her experiences growing up in the same neighbourhood and explores themes of identity, community, and cultural memory.
