Policy Overview
The Cambridge Public Library (CPL) provides public access to the Internet to foster an individual’s education, cultural, recreational, literacy and information needs. CPL supports the Ontario Library Association’s Statement on Intellectual Freedom and the Intellectual Rights of the Individual and maintains a commitment to providing free and safe access to the Internet. CPL takes reasonable measures to ensure the privacy and confidentiality of Internet Users. CPL assumes no responsibility or liability for any direct or indirect damages arising from the use of library computers or devices, Internet Services or connection to the WIFI network.
CPL’s computers are located in public areas and shared by users of all ages, backgrounds and sensibilities and offers unfiltered access to the Internet.
CPL’s conditions for computer and Internet use are as follows:
- Individuals are expected to respect other library users when using library computers or tablets, or their own devices at the library, including appropriate volume, content of material and appropriate viewing and listening behaviour.
- Parents or guardians are responsible for guiding and supervising their child’s use of a library computer and/or Internet access.
- Members must use their own library card to access computers. Visitors can obtain internet access cards to access computers.
- CPL prohibits use of its computers and network for illegal purposes. Access to the Internet must not be used to post or transmit unlawful, threatening, abusive, libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic or similar material. The intentional deletion, or damage to files or data belonging to the library or other users, copyright violations or theft of services will be reported to the appropriate legal authorities.
- CPL also prohibits damaging or modifying library computer equipment, software, or network, and accessing confidential information. All users assume total responsibility and risk when accessing and/or using CPL’s equipment, Internet or WIFI.
- All users must agree to this policy and its conditions of use to access CPL’s Internet service through public computers and/or its wireless network.
Furthermore, CPL reserves the right to:
- Limit computer and Internet use in terms of the amount of time used and/or network load.
- Ask members to switch internet sites if the site they are viewing features explicit material.
- Terminate an Internet session at any time.
- Log, monitor, and review all activities on CPL computers, Internet and WIFI network.
Failure to comply with this policy will result in loss of computer and Internet access and possible suspension from CPL premises and other services. Unlawful activities may result in criminal prosecution.
